Jessalyn Finch January 6-February 2, 2023 Woman in Screen Charcoal on paper, clay 2023
Statement: Woman In Screen is part of the artist’s exploration of how our concept of voyeurism has changed since the pandemic. As we have increased the time spent viewing people and their lives through a screen, the permission we feel we now have to perceive, objectify, and judge has spilled over into our interactions with people in real life.
About the artist: Jessalyn Finch creates work that explores how we view and are being viewed in various aspects of our lives. She is best known for her life-size figure drawing collection, Shadowform, exhibited at the Historic Chateau Theatre and Rochester Art Center, which highlights our complex relationship with the human body. Since the pandemic, Finch has crossed over into other mediums including wearable sculptures used in living sculpture performance art that explore the concepts of voyeurism, engagement and interplay with the audience and our environment. Equipped with an educational background in printmaking, drawing, and eastern philosophy, her work is designed as a catalyst for discussion. She continues to experiment with scale, and immersive multimedia experiences at her home studio in Rochester, MN.
